Walter Van Beirendonck - Menswear Spring/Summer 2015 Collection in Paris (with interview)

access_time 00:02:11

Every collection by walter van beirendonck looks beyond simply the clothing. the antwerp designer uses the catwalk to spread messages concerning the world around him, which are directly reflected in his wardrobe. and next summer, his romantic dandy becomes a conqueror. blazers and tailcoats are deliberately designed to look broken-down, fastened by press studs. belts on kimono jackets and loose trousers take inspiration from the world of judo. the surfer dude, as imagined by walter, emerges wearing stirrup pants or a graphic, colourful jumpsuit. we pick out the designer’s signature essentials, including overalls and baggy t-shirts. work on materials – from brocades to thick cottons – remain a basis for the collection, but also for the printed artwork devised by artist scooter laforge.interviews:walter van beirendonck :for me, fashion is all about communication and i use a fashion show as a way of communicating things, firstly a new collection but also a new idea, a new message or something that i want to express and tell people about, as this is more powerful than i am.it is combative but at the same time, there is this very romantic, very deconstructed side. there is richness but also a black and white, almost dark element.all the painting was done by scooter laforge. he has done a really amazing job and he worked very hard on it. we started by doing all the paintings and afterwards, they were all either woven or printed, so it was a lengthy process.scooter laforge:walter and i had been working on this show together for about three months and he connected with me through facebook. we have never met before, only through emails so this is the first time i am really ever meeting him.he sent me ten words. all he said was ‘go for it, go crazy’. he sent me the ten words that represented this collection and he said do whatever you want; i don’t want any rules, paint however you want, get your true feelings out onto the canvas, use big bold brush strokes and go wild so i just let all my inhibitions go and let the paint come out and you saw the results.music from the show
