Hanneli Rupert, daughter of Johann Rupert, chairman of Cartier and Richemont, has emerged as a countercurrent voice defending the use of exotic leather while the rest of the industry has been moving away from it.
Selfridges has become the latest big name to move beyond a ban on fur to include exotic skins in its list of prohibited materials. That will include animals such as pythons, alligators, crocodiles and lizards.
Fur, so long associated with glamour and luxury, has lost its lustre. Over the course of the past year, many of the world's most prestigious fashion houses have announced plans to stop using the controversial material.
