Vetements' stand-out designs sparks knock-off frenzy

Zeitgeist-y fashion label Vetements has sparked a series of knock-offs with its unique line. The Paris-based ready-to-wear label, led by Demna Gvsalia and known for its oversized fits and streetwear inspiration, has become one of the most sought-after luxury brands of the past year.

This week, Urban Outfitters released an almost indistinguishable version of one of Vetements’ newest graphic shirts. Gvsalia’s designs are so identifiable that it has sparked an entire label, called Vetememes, dedicated to creating tongue-in-cheek imitations of Vetements products.

Earlier this week, Urban Outfitters released a nearly-identical version of one of Vetement’s $920 USD t-shirt. The oversized-shirt features a large photo of Snoop Dogg's face. While the Urban Outfitters version isn’t as oversized as the Vetements original, the shirt is similar in every other way.

Earlier this year, one brand took the Vetements-imitation trend one step further by creating an entire label dedicated to cheeky Vetements knock-offs. Dubbed “Vetememes”, the New York-brand (created by an employee at menswear resale site Grailed), creates almost exact versions of Vetements items, or apparel "memes," but subs out the Parisian label's branding for the word “Vetememes”. The parody label retails its products at a fraction of the price of the originals.

Earlier Tuesday morning, Vetememes has just announced that they will be releasing a full collection of Vetements look-alikes. The parody brand is currently taking pre-orders for its new collection.
