The Italian luxury label has unveiled seven limited-edition versions of its "Palazzo Empire" bag, celebrating seven great world cities. The collection is the result of a Versace competition, which opened back in March, offering members of the public the chance to help create designs for this iconic handbag.

Back in March, Versace launched an international competition called "7 bags for 7 cities," calling on the creativity of the public and fashion fans worldwide to help design special editions of one of the brand's most famous bags, the Palazzo Empire.

To enter the competition, participants were asked to take a photo of a monument, a unique place or an unseen side of the city of their choice, and share it with Versace's creative team. The brand then picked a selection of photos as the basis for the seven new custom bags.

From Paris to Tokyo

Seven global cities are celebrated in this new "Palazzo Empire" line, with seven fashion capitals portrayed in various color combinations and fading shades. Paris is captured in plum and pink, New York in blue, Milan in orange and Tokyo in pink. Hong Kong, Beijing and Sao Paulo also feature in the limited-edition collection.

The Italian fashion house has made just 10 models of each design. The bags will be sold in selected boutiques in their native cities. The Paris model is due to land in the Versace store at 45 avenue Montaigne from September 13, with other versions going on sale in their respective cities the following week.

The original "Palazzo Empire" is made from calfskin leather and can be carried by its handles or worn across the body. This iconic design is instantly recognizable and stands out thanks to the Medusa head detail -- the symbol of Versace -- on the front. Various special editions have previously been created, including models in crocodile skin and python leather.

Versace will present its spring/summer 2017 ready-to-wear collection September 23 at Milan Fashion Week, Italy.
