Ugg launches anti-counterfeit social media accounts

NetNames, a global firm specializing in anti-counterfeiting, revealed last week that the US loses $225 billion a year due to counterfeiting. The company also stated that online counterfeit sales have increased over 15% in 2014, and it expects the number to increase. Ugg aims to turn the tables on counterfeiting with the launch of its anti-counterfeit social media accounts on Facebook and Twitter.

The Ugg anti-counterfeiting accounts are aimed to protect shoppers from purchasing counterfeit Ugg products. The brand’s Facebook page features videos and photos that help consumers identify counterfeit product and alert them of scams. For instance, many websites advertise “outlet uggs”, “discount uggs”, or "uggs Black Friday”, but the brand stresses that the only way to ensure that shoppers have purchased authentic Ugg merchandise is through the brand’s official website.

To date, the brand has taken legal action against 60,000 websites selling counterfeit Ugg merchandise, has removed 300,000 counterfeit listings on Alibaba’s consumer marketplace, Taobao, and has seized over 2.5 million counterfeit Ugg brand products since 2007.
