Selfridges celebrates "Bright Old Things" with new window displays
Jan 9, 2015
This week, British department store Selfridges launched its annual "Bright Young Things" showcase, which normally celebrates emerging stars from the worlds of art, fashion, food and design. For 2015, however, the retailer chose to focus on "Bright Young Things" - people who have "have undergone a ‘retirement renaissance’, a complete career change or an inspiring step into the unknown."
The participants are in their mid-forties to mid-eighties and have each been given their own Selfridges window. Among the 14 creatives are Sue Kreitzman, a former food writer and broadcaster who is now an artist and curator, "punk hero" Bruno Wizard of The Rejects and The Homosexuals, designer Nick Wooster and painter Molly Parkin.
Linda Hewson, Selfridges Creative Director, comments: "One of the things we pride ourselves on is telling great stories. How better to start the year than by celebrating thirteen of them? I can’t wait to hear people’s responses to this initiative - believe me, these people can teach us all a thing or two about growing old properly."
Selfridges also teamed up with Todd Selby, who photographed and interviewed the Bright Old Things in their homes and creative space. Products from the Bright Old Things will be sold in-store and online, and special events showcasing the participants' work will take place throughout the scheme.
Selfridges comments that "‘old’ is as subjective as it is irrelevant" and the Bright Old Things really do prove that age ain't nothing but a number.
