Nike is restructuring in China. The American athletic brand has just annouced the the signing of a long-term lease with private real estate company Tishman Speyer *. The lease is for an area of 54,574 square meters (587,000 sq ft) near Shanghai upon which the Oregon-based group plans to erect its headquarters for the Greater China region (mainland China, Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan).
"This is a strategic investment for Nike and its growth in China. The new headquarters will allow us to gain strength in terms of equipment and resources, as well as permit our Shanghai-based employees to consolidate the entire portfolio of Nike Inc. brands in a single campus," said Craig Cheek, Vice President and General Manager of Nike Greater China.
The headquarters will consist of three buildings, including: offices, a conference center, and five-story commercial buildings. It will also contain a football pitch, an indoor basketball court and a fitness center. Nike hopes to occupy the premises by the first quarter of 2014. The headquarters will be located in The Spring area managed by Tishman Speyer. An area of almost one million square feet located between Shanghai’s two airports Shanghai and a few kilometers from the business center of the Chinese megalopolis, and will include homes, commercial spaces and a park.
In the second quarter of fiscal year 2012 ended November 30th Nike, which has had a presence in China for the past 30 years, but which has until now lacked a central headquarters, was up 35% in terms of sales in China – at about 650 million dollars.
