Lakme Fashion Week kicks off in St Regis
Lakme Fashion Week will run from the 16th to the 20th August for their winter/festive 2017 edition with St Regis as the venue.
St Regis is the country’s tallest hotel tower located in the Lower Parel area of Mumbai. The summer/resort Lakme Fashion Week was hosted in the Reliance Jio Garden located in the Bandra Kurla Complex, Mumbai, but it was previously held at St Regis in 2016 and so this round of shows sees a return to the previously used venue.
Although Lakme Fashion Week is revisiting the venue, it is an event known for its firsts. For example, along with launching many new artisans as designers, the event has presented the first cruise show in Indian fashion and had a transgender model walk its runways which had never before happened in India. This season’s events will also offer firsts as the designer Wendell Roderiks has booked plus size models exclusively for his show for the first time. The models were scouted from an open call when over 300 applicants turned up. Seventeen women and four men were chosen to model the collection which is designed to break the stereotype of what plus sized fashion is supposed to be, featuring bold and bright colours.
The fashion event is organised by Lakme and IMG Reliance Pvt Ltd. The event runs twice a year and was started in 1999. Both Indian and international designers have taken part in the event such as Dolce and Gabbana and Roberto Cavalli.
