Lakme Fashion Week announces summer/resort 2018 Next Gen batch

On December 5, Lakmé Fashion Week (LFW) announced its 25th batch of Gen Next designers that will appear in their summer/ resort 2018 fashion week.

On December 1, the LFW Advisory Board met to discuss the next crop of upcoming designers that they would give a chance to show at their upcoming fashion week in Mumbai. Some of the board members present at the meeting included Purnima Lamba, Lakmé’s Head of Innovations, Jaspreet Chandok, IMG Reliance’s Fashion Head, Nonita Kalra, Harper’s Bazaar’s Editor, and Narendra Kumar, a fashion designer.

The five design labels that have been picked to feature in LFW’s summer/resort edition include the design duo Anvita Sharma and Asit Barik, Istituto Marangoni Paris graduates who have experience working at Rick Owens among other designers and create simple, genderless garments that aim to be sustainable and casual but with an attention to detail. Kolkata’s Ayushman Mitra will also show a collection of garments with prints taken from his own paintings and Padma Raj Keshri has been selected to show a collection from her brand Looms of Ladakh. Mohammed Mazhar from Saharanpur is a graduate from INIFD and he will present a collection inspired by “Dhobighat” which aims to bring together different artisans. Finally, Helena Bajaj Larsen, a graduate from the Parsons School of Design in New York, will showcase her textile and jewellery creations which use Khadi silks from India.

Purnima Lamba said in a statement on December 5, “The Gen Next programme at Lakmé Fashion Week has become the benchmark for the ‘future of fashion’. It has mined many gifted designers season after season, and we are excited to see what the young talent has in store for us this Summer/Resort 2018.” LFW has launched the careers of many designers through their Gen Next programme including Masaba Gupta and Rahul Mishra and so the fashion industry will be paying close attention to their upcoming showcase.

This program is a testimony of Lakmé Fashion Week’s continued effort towards nurturing fashion over the years and shaping the future of the industry in India. The 25th batch comprises a promising young group of designers with individualistic qualities who are sure to follow in the footsteps of their predecessors,” said Jaspreet Chandok.
