Jeremy Scott puts a showgirl spin on Moschino's resort collection
As always with Moschino, the theme took center stage at the resort and men's 2018 show, presented at Milk Studios in Hollywood on Thursday. At this particular runway, the subject was Las Vegas, with a dash of Spongebob - but more on that later.
For Moschino’s creative director Jeremy Scott, the Las Vegas look translated to a mix of bedazzled cowboy gear, denim patchwork, and a heavy dose of campy Americana. Models wore everything from patchwork denim overalls to flame-covered pantsuits. A few were outfitted in classic styles befitting the Vegas-inspired setting, including sheer black ensembles with appliquéd silhouettes of Vegas showgirls; casual looks topped off with exuberant feather headdresses and even a literal Playboy bunny getup (with a Moschino-branded bubblegum backpack for good measure).
The men's looks were slightly less attention-grabbing, but no less glitzy. Male models were bedecked in either cowboy looks, motocross or even NASCAR-inspired getups. One male model walked the runway in a pair of sparkly briefs - and not much else.
As is typical for his Moschino presentations, Scott recruited a few top models for the resort show. Miranda Kerr wore one of the sweeter, 1950s-inspired looks, while Joan Smalls closed the show adorned head-to-toe in spangled or printed flames, including a cowboy hat, sequinned dress and platform shoes.
Accessories were no afterthought either; models wore either cowboy shoes or platform sandals for the most part, or in one instance a pair of platform-cowboy boots. Bowling bag-inspired purses were also present, as well as handbags embellished with a motocross-style collar and zipper.
The Spongebob element was thankfully limited to just a few shirts and backpacks (including a sweatshirt sported by Scott himself on the final walk). But the partnership was in good cause; Scott recently announced he would partner with (Red) to create a Spongebob-inspired capsule collection to benefit the non-profit, whose funds go towards people living with AIDS.
Staging the show at Milk Studios in Los Angeles, Scott of course managed to get some of LA’s A-listers to his front row. Among those in attendance were actress Tracee Ellis Ross, plus-size model Ashley Graham and burlesque star Dita Von Teese.
In staging his resort and men's show in LA, Scott has aligned Moschino with other major European labels to show in Southern California. Recently, brands like Dior, Tom Ford and Hermès have all put on shows in the city, a huge boon for the stylists and editors based on the west coast.
Joe Zee, editor-in-chief of Yahoo! Style and formerly of Elle magazine attended the Moschino show and told FashionNetwork.com that he is excited by the arrival of European brands in LA. “I think there is such an energy for Los Angeles right now, for so many things,” he said. “These designers know it. That’s what designers do, they gravitate towards what’s hot right now.”
Following the show, Moschino hosted an after-party at the Roosevelt Hotel. There, DJs played pop hits from Katy Perry and Rihanna, with celebrities like Fergie making an appearance. Scott has always pushed the boundaries in his collections for Moschino, and his resort 2018 collection for the brand was creditably no different.
