Etsy pushes towards physical stores

Published

At an up-coming vintage trade show in Paris, independent Etsy sellers will be setting up stalls organised by the online retail platform. The move is seen as a way to support online vendors that wish to open their own physical stores whilst promoting the products that are most representative of the site. “Etsy.com represents the beautiful side of the vintage trend and has quickly become a major player in the field,” said a spokesperson for Etsy.

The wedding sector is also an area of focus for Etsy. The site is multiplying its presence outside of the web in this sector in order to give its sellers more visibility. After taking part in the Andy Festival in February, Esty UK will be participating at a wedding showroom in London in May. The event will allow Etsy to showcase some 80 designers present on the site.

With over 22 million members and 800,000 online stores, Etsy wants to expand its customer base by presenting to new markets. In December 2012, Etsy opened its first store in the trendy Soho area of New York. Aside from showcasing numerous sellers, the pop-up event offered workshops and demonstrations. Over a ten-day period the event welcomed 20,000 people. “One of our objectives was to twist the arm of people who were aware of what Etsy is but have yet to buy on the site,' explains Randy Hunt, creative director at Etsy. "We are able to present, position and promote the Etsy community in a unique way, bringing in enthusiastic customers,” he added. The event seemed to do just the trick, with 50% of in-store buyers having never bought from Etsy.com.
