FRANKFURT, Germany - Beiersdorf, the German maker of Nivea hand cream and Tesa sticky tape, said Thursday that group sales rose in 2013, but growth was curbed by the strength of the euro.

Sales advanced by 1.7 percent to 6.141 billion euros ($8.4 billion) last year, Beiersdorf said in a statement.

Excluding exchange-rate effects, growth would have been 7.2 percent.

"The difference ... is attributable to the strength of the euro in the past year," explained said chief executive Stefan Heidenreich, insisting that "the growth dynamic (was) excellent" and was "achieved across all areas of the group."

Beiersdorf is scheduled to publish full details of its 2013 earnings on March 4.
