On July 25, the first day of India Couture Week, Anju Modi showed a couture collection entitled “A Maiden’s Prayer” that mixed Victorian aesthetics with Modi’s signature opulent traditional wear.

“Sometimes, I secretly wish I lived in the Victorian era,” wrote Modi on her social media just days before her upcoming couture show. “It’s aesthetically pleasing art and architecture, classic literature, music and ostentatious fashion is the inspirational force behind our Couture’18 Collection.” As soon as the models hit the runway, this was immediately clear.

Modi’s couture collection would still be classed as mainly traditional wear but the embellishments and embroidery showed her Victorian inspiration. Describing the era as, “An age that holds eminence pride with an attitude,” Modi covered lehengas with Victorian-esque floral and filigree motifs and added sheer Victorian style shawls to empire-waisted gowns.

The menswear was also adorned with Victorian motifs with a navy and maroon colour palette and only slightly less embellishment. The show ended with Modi’s celebrity guest, the actress Kangana Ranaut, walking the runway in a gold lehenga and blouse set paired with a maroon embroidered velvet jacket.

India Couture Week, organised by the Hindustan Times and Sunil Sethi Design Alliance, began on July 25 and runs until July 29. The event is being held at the Taj Palace in New Delhi.
