By signing an agreement with Alibaba, Zara will raise its visibility in the Chinese market. Already with its own website in China since 2012, Inditex’s flagship brand has now also opened an e-store on Alibaba-owned Tmall.com.

The launch will raise the visibility of Zara, which has more than 150 stores in 60 cities, and could allow it to reach a wider clientele through its own website. Tmall.com, which largely resembles Amazon, has hundreds of millions of users throughout the country. It has captured approximately 60% of the online shopping market.

Ivy W. Kuo, associate director of Price Waterhouse in Shanghai, who was quoted by the Spanish news agency EFE as saying that the mid-October launch of the Zara store on Tmall.com was not random. The analyst points out that it comes less than a month before November 11.

In China, 11/11 marks "Singles Day". It’s a serious shopping day for many Chinese, who flock to brick-and-mortar and especially online stores. Last year, China’s Cyber Monday generated 3.8 billion euros in transactions, which clearly makes Zara want to take part.
