The khadi board will invest around Rs 17 crore in the project through which it will train around 5,000 artisans in 14 districts of West Bengal. It will also provide the artisans with the necessary infrastructure for the production of the fabric and help them market their products across India.

Currently, West Bengal has around 115 khadi institutions that are into the production of the khadi fabric.

"Our main objective is to train artisans in churning out products as per the present market demand. We will provide them with infrastructure and most importantly, create a platform for marketing their products," in a statement said Mrityunjoy Bandyopadhyay, CEO of WBKVIB.

"At present, there is a huge demand for cotton khadi, both in domestic and international markets, mainly due to its eco-friendly nature. We will assist them in integrating modern design, equip them in order to cater to the demands and bridge the gap between supply and demand,” he added.

Khadi has been witnessing significant growth across India and had reported overall sales of Rs 2,510 crore ($358.6 million) in the last fiscal. The khadi fabric production in India has increased by at least 40 percent during the last year.
