Walmart, which recently acquired a 77 percent stake in Flipkart, plans to use Flipkart’s technology know-how for its global business. Two areas that Flipkart has made progress in are data analytics and progressive web applications that are designed to give an easy shopping experience even with slower internet and cheaper phones.

“I am excited to start working with Flipkart’s tech team,” Jeremy King, the executive vice president and chief technology officer at Walmart said in a statement as reported by ET Bureau. “We treat every acquisition, regardless of size, the same where we try and leave them alone for a year, just to make sure the integration goes well. And then we wait for them to ask and then we start working with them… In Flipkart’s case, we know they have a number of systems they have innovated on that we are interested in. But we are sort of in that quiet period, but we are almost ready to talk to them.”

Flipkart has been an online retail technology leader for some time and started working on web apps tailored to rural customers in 2015. These customers tend to have cheaper phones with lower capabilities and so Flipkart developed an app that was only 100 kilobytes (100 times smaller than the Android version) that rural customers could use. This helped Flipkart to reach a wider audience and Walmart hopes to do the same through access to this technology.
