Walmart India will promote Sameer Aggarwal to head of Walmart India operations and he will take over from current president and CEO of Walmart India, Krish Iyer, in April this year.

Walmart India has named Sameer Aggarwal as its new head - Archivo

Aggarwal will be Walmart India’s new head from April, an anonymous source close to the matter told ET Retail. Iyer will transfer to an advisory role in the business, as he still has time left on his contract, sources said.

Aggarwal joined Walmart India in April 2018 as chief strategy and administrative officer for the business. Aggarwal was then promoted to deputy CEO of Walmart India in January, making his new appointment his third promotion at the business. Iyer has led Walmart India for the past six years.

In his new role, Aggarwal will be tasked with finding a successful business model for Walmart in India. The U.S.-based business has struggled to find footing as its business-to-business retail chain Best Price Modern Wholesale remains loss-making.

The business announced that it would halt expansion for its Best Price Modern Wholesale chain. The business also plans to convert some of its wholesale stores in India into fulfilment centres for its subsidiary, e-commerce giant Flipkart, as part of a restructuring initiative.
