Walmart India has opened its second Indian fulfilment centre in Lucknow and it will deliver the business’ merchandise including apparel to registered stores including Kirana stores, hotels, and other businesses. The centre will act as a pilot programme and is intended to speed up operations.

Walmart opened its first fulfilment centre in Mumbai last year and, according to statements made at the Lucknow opening, one more centre will be opened and the three will be studied. Following this, the business will continue to expand in India.

Walmart will also open around 50 wholesale stores in India in the next few years. The business has stated that 22 of these are currently in various stages of either obtaining government approval or of construction.

Walmart is currently focusing on India as one of its main markets for growth. The business recently finalised its Flipkart acquisition deal and, pending government approval expected by the end of the year, it will own a 77 percent stake in the e-commerce giant. This round of investment comes after the business has to cease its India expansion for its Best Price cash-and-carry stores from 2011 to 2017 due to a focus on US anti-bribery laws.
