Walmart launches Myntra clothing on its Canada e-commerce site

Walmart has launched a range of clothing by its Indian subsidiary Flipkart’s fashion arm Myntra on its Canadian e-commerce site. Available labels include Bollywood celebrity-backed HRX, House of Pataudi and All About You.

Walmart now sells a range of Myntra clothing on its Canadian online site through a seller named Savadika Retail. The site’s Myntra page is titled “The Best of Bollywood presented by Myntra” and the selection features both western wear and Indian traditional wear from cotton kurtas to athleisure leggings.

The three Bollywood celebrity brands that feature are House of Pataudi by Saif Ali Khan, All About You by Deepika Padukone, and HRX by Hrithik Roshan.

By launching Myntra fashion brands in Canada, Walmart, which acquired a 77 percent controlling stake of Flipkart and its subsidiary Myntra last summer, is using its investment to tap into the Indian retailer’s global potential. This is a move to grow the reach of Flipkart and comes after Walmart tested the water by launching a small range of Myntra clothing in some of its Canadian brick-and-mortar Walmart brand stores in October 2018.

As the new foreign direct investment norms in India could complicate e-commerce retail there at least in the short term, Walmart is focusing on other avenues for Myntra’s private labels. The move also allows the business to test the global response to Myntra’s clothing and hopes to tap into the Indian diaspora customer base in Canada.
