Walmart India appoints Sameer Aggarwal as deputy CEO

Walmart India has appointed Sameer Aggarwal as its deputy CEO, and the executive stepped into his new role on January 1.

“Sameer Aggarwal has been appointed deputy chief executive officer, Walmart India effective, January 1, 2020,” said a company spokesperson, ET Bureau reported.

“He will continue reporting to Krish Iyer, president and CEO Walmart India, and oversee operations, merchandising, people, marketing, real estate, kirana development program, digital, e-commerce, and strategy.”

Aggarwal first joined Walmart India less than two years ago in April 2018, as chief strategy and administrative officer at the business.

Eight months later, Aggarwal was promoted to chief business officer at Walmart India. Before joining Walmart, Aggarwal previously worked at Yum Brands in Thailand and Sainsbury’s in London.
 
The executive is expected to take over Walmart’s flagship wholesale retail unit in India from current CEO, Krish Iyer, in the coming months, sources told ET Bureau.

U.S.-based Walmart’s India unit reported a 11% rise in revenue in the 2019 financial year totalling Rs 4,065 crore ($611 million). The India business’ net loss doubled over the same time period to reach Rs 172 crore.
