Walmart’s CEO for Asia, Dirk Van den Berghe, has stepped down from his role at the business and is also expected to step down from Flipkart’s board of directors.

Walmart will see some changes in its Asia management

“After six years with Walmart, Dirk Van den Berghe, executive vice president, global sourcing and regional CEO of Asia, has decided to retire in March 2021 to spend more time with family in Europe,” a Walmart spokesperson told ET Bureau in an email, confirming the words of several sources.

Berghe first joined Walmart in 2014 as regional CEO for Canada. He has also held the role of chief executive of Walmart China. Berghe was part of the Walmart leadership team that handled its investment to acquire a majority stake in e-commerce business Flipkart in 2018. He was then given a seat on Flipkart’s board of directors along with a number of other Walmart executives.

Last week, Walmart Inc CEO, Doug McMillon, reaffirmed the business’ commitment to the Indian market, seeing strong potential for future growth. The business reported growth for both Flipkart and fashion arm Myntra this year despite the challenging economic circumstances, strengthening its grasp on India’s online market.
