As Wacoal expands its product lines and steps into shapewear, the brand plans to expand across more metro cities.

Wacoal was founded in 1946 and is currently Japan’s most popular lingerie brand and the label entered India in 2015 in partnership with Periwinkle Fashions, Tainwala Group’s flagship company. The brand’s main retail presence is in the metro cities of Mumbai, Delhi, Chennai, Hyderabad, Bangalore, and Kolkata but they have set their sights on a greater metro expansion. Sandeep Goenka, CEO of Periwinkle Fashions Pvt Ltd stated that along with continuing to expand their product categories in India, the Japanese brand will also continue expanding its brick and mortar stores.

When asked about the label’s latest Indian product launch, shapewear, Geonka said: “These are highly functional yet comfortable pieces, to be worn for the entire day. As a normal practice, other shapewear is not comfortable beyond four to five hours. The fabric technology is such that it makes movement easy and natural. In addition to this we also have sports bra range for low to high impact physical activity.” The fit and comfort factor of lingerie is becoming increasingly important for consumers in India and so Wacoal is following this trend.

Speaking about the brand’s planned flagship store retail expansion, Goenka said: “We have four EBOs with many more in the pipeline. Currently we are present in three cities, [and] plan to reach out to other metro cities as we expand.” In this way, Wacoal looks set to become one of the biggest lingerie brands in India.
