On July 26, Varun Bahl presented a collection inspired by nature and a desire to bring Indian couture, and its myriad craft techniques, to a global audience. Showstopper Rashmika Mandanna closed the show in a bright red, floral embellished lehenga with a simply cut yet intricately detailed blouse.

“Redefining the realm of Indian couture and giving it a global appeal, the couturier is celebrated for capturing the craft of Indian hand embroideries and brought back his evergreen designs in a refreshed avatar,” announced the Fashion Design Council of India on Facebook. “Inspired by the bounty of nature found in the wilderness of forests and a hint of drama and fun, using upcycled vintage embroidery and appliqués, the collection brings Indian Couture into the global fashion culture, and creates everlasting pieces that rethink tradition for the changing world.”

The collection featured classic traditional wear silhouettes including lehengas and sarees as well as fusions style sets, gowns, tailored suits, coat dresses, and even more experimental draped looks featuring statement 3D botanical embroidery. Bahl incorporated vintage embroidery into the garments to add a sustainable element to the designs.

For men, bright, floral suits in hues such as mustard yellow made a strong statement, especially when paired with sheer tops and bright velvet shoes. Models wore classic glam makeup and traditional style jewellery.

India Couture Week kicked off on July 22 and runs until July 31. This edition marks 15 years of India Couture Week and 13 designers have been selected by the Fashion Design Council of India to present their latest collections at the Taj Palace in New Delhi as well as numerous offsite locations.
