Valentine's Day drives sales at UK's John Lewis

At John Lewis, the UK department store, sales were up 3.4% year-on-year in the week to January 14, driven by Valentine's Day footfall. Fashion sales were up 6% in the period.

Women's accessories and beauty sales were up 3% and womenswear sales were up 12% year-on-year. Knitwear sales also did well as temperatures in the UK dropped. Home sales rose 8% year-on-year.

Online sales also did well, with a 14% increase in sales. Online fashion sales were up 28%, with womenswear sales up 52%.

"As we near the end of the first trading period we are focusing on ensuring availability is strong, therefore putting us in a good position for the coming season and enabling us to meet customers' expectations during the half term week,"said Dino Rocos,  Operations Director, John Lewis.
