US-based footwear brand Skechers has signed an agreement with real estate developer Lodha and plans to open a new 1.1 million square-foot distribution centre in India to boost its logistics capabilities in the country.

In order to enable it to continue to grow its business in India over the coming five to seven years, Skechers is upgrading its existing distribution centre into a technologically advanced facility, the business announced in a statement on June 22, the Press Trust of India reported. Upon completion, the new centre will enable the business to expand its existing distribution capabilities by five times.

The construction of the new distribution centre will be completed in two phases, ET Bureau reported. Phase one will see the construction of a 660,000 square-foot area which is scheduled to being operating at full capacity in mid-2023. This will enable Skechers to ship up to 100,000 units of its products each day.

Phase two of the project will comprise the construction of an additional 440,000 square-foot space. This will be carried out over the following three to four years, according to Skechers’ announcement.

“Growing our capabilities is a definitive step in strengthening our presence across India,” said Sketchers’ COO David Weinburg, the Press Trust of India reported. “With this, we hope to meet the burgeoning demand in the footwear and apparel sector.”
