Urban Outfitters holiday sales up 3.6%

Urban Outfitters, Inc. reports its total company net sales for the two-month period ending December 31, 2017, rose 3.6% over the same period last year.

Comparable retail segment net sales increased 2% for November and December of 2017. Comparable retail sales by brand increased 5% for Free People, 2% for the Anthropologie Group and 1% at Urban Outfitters. Wholesale segment net sales rose 6.8 percent during the same period.

In a news release, Urban Outfitters noted that the 2% rise in retail comps was "driven by strong, double-digit growth in the direct-to-consumer channel." The release noted that this growth offset poor store performance.

The company opened 18 new locations in the past year. New stores the company added to its network include 8 Free People stores, 5 Urban Outfitters stores, 4 Anthropologie stores and 1 Food and Beverage restaurant. The company also closed 3 Free People stores, 1 Urban Outfitters store, 1 Anthropologie store and 1 Food and Beverage restaurant.

The company operates 500 stores in the US, Canada and Europe, including almost 250 Urban Outfitters stores and more than 200 Anthropologie stores. There are also 130 Free People stores in North America and 12 restaurants.
