British department store retailer John Lewis saw sales increase by 12.9% year-on-year to £74.73m in the week to March 14. The company credited the increase to gift buying before Mother's Day on March 15.

Online sales also continue to grow and rose by 23.2% year-on-year. The Home section did the best, with sales up 18.4%, but Fashion also proved popular before Mother's Day, up 17.4%. Beauty products and accessories also sold well, especially handbags, the company said.

"The days are getting warmer, the evenings are getting lighter and spring is definitely in the air. Our customers' thoughts will be turning to Easter pursuits, with the school holiday period just a couple of weeks away," Maggie Porteous, Director of Selling, North and New Format, John Lewis, predicted.
