British designer James White, who graduated from Falmouth University with a BA(Hons) in Fashion Design last year, has won the European Young Designers Contest at Porto Fashion Week. He won both the prize for UK designer and the overall prize, which is worth €8000.

The competition was open to recent fashion graduates, with Falmout University the only UK university to take part. Other contestants were from Germany, Spain, Italy, France and Portugal.

James said: "I thought that if you won the country section you couldn't win the overall competition so I was so shocked when my name got called out for the second time!

"I was definitely surprised to win as the competition was really tough and there were some amazingly talented designers. Especially the other Falmouth entrants - of course I'd say that because they're my friends and colleagues but their collections are incredibly accomplished and would have been very hard to beat. It was very overwhelming to win and it still feels really unreal at the moment!"

Porto Fashion Show is organised by CENIT, the Textile Intelligence Centre, and is meant to both publicise new European fashion talents and promote Oporto and Portugal abroad.
