UK judge extends Nirav Modi’s remand in prison until September 19

Accused jeweller Nirav Modi attended a remand hearing via video link from his cell in a UK prison on August 22 and saw his remand in judicial custody extended until September 19.

A judge ruled at a hearing at Westminster Magistrates' Court on Thursday that Nirav Modi will now remain in Wandsworth prison in south-west London, UK, until at least September 19, the Press Trust of India reported. Modi has resided in the prison since his arrest in London in March.

Modi is one of the key accused in the Punjab National Bank fraud case, one of the largest reported frauds in India’s banking history. Indian authorities are working to extradite Modi to India to stand trial and his UK extradition trial is just beginning. 

As Modi is held in a UK prison, his Uncle and fellow accused Mehul Choksi is believed to be residing in Antigua. As Indian authorities work on Modi’s extradition from the UK, they are also in negotiations with authorities in Antigua and Barbuda in an attempt to extradite Choksi. 

Both Modi and Choksi have refused to return to India to stand trial for their accused fraud. Modi has cited fears for his life and Choksi has cited medical issues as reasons for staying abroad.
