UK February footfall figures best since May 2014, BRC says

Last month saw the best footfall figures since May 2014 in the UK, the British Retail Consortium says. Footfall was down 0.5%, less than the -0.8% three-month average and a marked improvement on January's 1.2% decline.

The largest decline was seen in shopping centres, where footfall was down 1.5%. Footfall on the high street fell 0.6% year-on-year, compare to a 1.6% decline in January, while footfall in out-of-town locations was up 1% year-on-year.

Helen Dickinson, British Retail Consortium Director General, said:
"Although it's usually traditional to see us putting our feet up after the Christmas rush and January sales this doesn't seem to be the case for out of town shopping. We are still flocking for those big ticket items with an increase in footfall by one per cent.

"Shopping centres saw a predictable decline for this time of year and retailers will be preparing for increased footfall when consumers feel recovered from taking advantage of all the great Black Friday, Christmas and January offerings."
