The Tirupur Exporter’s Association traveled to New Delhi on May 16 to join mounting voices calling for a ban on cotton exports and met with Union minister Piyush Goyal to share their concerns for the textile industry.

Rising yarn prices are causing challenges for manufacturing units in knitwear-hub Tirupur as cotton also soars

The TEA approached Goyal to ask for a temporary ban on cotton exports with the aim of helping to stabilise prices on Monday, the Indian Express reported. The organisation also asked Goyal to remove cotton from the Commodity Trading list and instead list it under the Essential Commodities Act.

The TEA demanded a temporary ban on yarn exports or other measures to ensure the required supply of yarn to domestic manufacturers. The knitwear industry is also struggling with increasing costs, according to the TEA, as yarn prices have more than doubled in 18 months.

“It has become really difficult for the knitwear garment industry and we need immediate help from the union government,” said the TEA’s president Raja M Shanmugham, the Indian Express reported. Shanmugham also said that the steep price hike in cotton has led to a doubling of prices of chemicals and other accessories which has further expounded the issue.
