Canadian singer The Weeknd announced on Monday the immediate termination of his collaboration with H&M, writing that he was shocked by the racist connotations of an image posted by the Swedish fashion giant.

The visual showed a black child wearing a hooded sweatshirt featuring the slogan, "Coolest monkey in the jungle".

 "I woke up this morning shocked and embarrassed by this photo. i’m deeply offended and will not be working with @hm anymore...",  the artist  wrote on Twitter.

The singer collaborated on two collections last year with H&M, the first launched in spring and the second last autumn.

Outrage has spread across the social networks since Sunday, compelling H&M to withdraw the photo and issue an apology.
