This season, The India Story explored the theme “Above & Beyond” for its December edition in Kolkata. The fashion, art, and lifestyle festival also explored gender and design with a debate.
“The India Story is our effort to give Kolkatans an exposure to the creative energy across the nation and reflect the finesse of our tradition and the brilliance of the future,” said Madhu Neotia, the event’s co-founder. “We wanted to kill the myth that an event of this stature can only happen in Delhi or Mumbai.”
The fashion, lifestyle, food, and arts event first took place in 2015 and takes place in Kolkata’s Swabhumi venue. This season, the event used its various creative mediums to explore transcendentalism in space and design. 11.11/Eleven Eleven presented clothing with this theme along with the labels Buna and Jenjum.
Bombay Perfumery presented a collection of home-grown perfumes created to explore the theme and Koi and Kainaat created home décor objects. In addition, Paul Matter created a collection of bespoke lighting.
On December 15, a debate took place with the topic “Does Gender Play a Role in Design?” As gender neutral fashion becomes more popular and embraced by numerous Indian fashion designers, the topic could not be more relevant to India’s current design climate. The debate featured designers Suket Dhir and Kiran Uttam Ghosh along with the scenographer Swarup Dutta and business head of Pero, Jasmeet Arora.
