Textiles Minister proposes pilot shopping festival in Bengaluru for 2020/ 2021

Minster for Textiles Smriti Zubin Irani plans to launch a pilot shopping festival in Bengaluru in 2020 or 2021 to showcase Indian-made artisan products and take the festival to other metros in future.

The Ministry of Textiles aims to launch its first ever shopping festival dedicated to handloom and handmade products this year or next, Irani announced on Thursday, ET Bureau reported. The shopping festival will promote products including jewellery, gems, textiles, handicrafts, and yoga and Ayurvedic items. The festival will act as a pilot and, based on its success, the event will subsequently be taken to other Indian metros.
 
“In addition to above focus sectors, the products to be showcased will include tribal products/ handicrafts, products from Jammu and Kashmir, North East states and other Hill States,” Irani wrote to the Rajya Sabha, ET Bureau reported.

As well as promoting handmade and handloom products at shopping festivals, the Minister of Textiles also aims to promote them online. The Ministry has engaged with 23 e-commerce platforms and plans to continue to worth with them to promote and retail ‘Made in India’ goods on their respective platforms. 
 
The Textiles Ministry has been promoting handloom textiles, especially Khadi, as part of the Union Government’s ‘Make in India’ campaign, which aims to increase domestic production across a range of sectors and increase India’s exports.
