Textiles business Sangam India Limited aims to become one of the most sustainable businesses in its sector and has taken steps towards this including increasing its use of clean energy and ameliorating its waste treatment.

Sangam India Limited has increased its commitment to sustainability

As part of its focus on sustainability, Sangam India Limited has installed two solar power plants which will bring down the business’ carbon footprint by 20% per year, the Hindustan Times reported. The business has also set up three effluent treatment plants and four sewerage treatment plants to reduce its industrial water contamination and enable the water to be reused.

“While India is amongst the world's largest producers and exporters of textiles, we cannot overlook the negative impact that the sector has on our environment,” said the business’ chief business strategist Pranal Modani, the Hindustan Times reported.

“We at Sangam India Limited have taken a conscious decision to become a responsible brand and are leading this change as far as the Indian textile segment is concerned. We intend to optimise our resource consumption while simultaneously developing ‘cleantech’ products that conserve resources themselves.”

The business plans to increase its use of recycled fibres and reduce its plastic waste. In order to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, the business will also focus on manufacturing organic cotton products.

“Our usage of organic cotton and organic fibre will help reduce the high levels of soil erosion and would eventually start improving the overall soil quality,” said Modani.
