Telangana's industries minister asks centre for help to boost handloom, textile sector

Telangana's industries minister KT Rama Rao has asked the central government to support the state’s handloom and textiles sector, earmark funding, and launch projects and organisations for the industry. 

Rao wrote a letter to Union finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman and Union textile minister Piyush Goyal to ask them to grant central government funding to Telangana state projects including the Kakatiya Mega Textile Park in Warangal and mega powerloom cluster in Sircilla, the Times of India reported. Rao is Telangana’s Minister for Municipal Administration and Urban Development, Industries and Commerce, and Information Technology. 
 
In his letter, Rao also requested that the Indian Institute of Handloom Technology be set up in Telangana as well as a National Textile Research Institute and Handloom Export Promotion Council be set up in Hyderabad. In order to develop the state’s textile manufacturing capacity, Rao urged the government to support the upgrading of the state’s textile technology by mandating a relaxation to the bank financing requirements for textile businesses looking to upgrade their technology. 

Rao stated that the Kakatiya Mega Textile Park project is taking place on a 1,200 acre land parcel and asked the government for Rs 898 crore for the project to use for infrastructure development at the site. Rao also asked for Rs 49.84 crore to sanction and fund the mega powerloom cluster at Sircilla in his letter.
