Tata Group which has a partnership with Inditex SA’s for running Zara stores in India is now looking to develop its own apparel brands and boost its presence in the Indian fashion market for faster growth.

Trent had recently announced that it will raise up to Rs 1,550 crore ($222.9 million) during the current financial year to fund its expansion plans in the country.

“Trent now plans to open 40 outlets of its flagship Westside chain every year and hundreds of its mass market Zudio stores, where nothing costs more than $15, across India,” said chairman of Trent Ltd Noel Tata in an interview to Bloomberg.

“The target audience: is the consumer population that is newly trend-conscious and globalised, but whose low average incomes means that clothing from Zara itself is still mostly out of reach. The middle class is growing, incomes have grown, Indian’s are travelling more and they have more money to spend. Now that we have built this capability and this model that is working so well, it’s time to grow faster,” Tata added.

Trent Ltd operates Westside and Zudio stores, which sell products ranging from apparel, footwear, accessories to cosmetics and perfumes to home accessories.
