Following months of lockdown due to high rates of coronavirus cases and fatalities, Tamil Nadu is relaxing its retail restrictions, a move eagerly received by shops and businesses. Along with extending general business hours in Coimbatore, the state government has announced it will allow theatres and cinema halls to reopen at 50% occupancy from August 27 after being shut for close to four months, the Press Trust of India reported.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin announced on August 21 that the state’s lockdown will continue for a further two weeks until September 6. He also announced that beaches and parks are permitted to reopen.

In preparation for relaxed retail restrictions and in order to keep Covid-19 cases down, the government has opened 24-7 vaccination centres at medical colleges and government hospitals. The government announced on Monday that these centres, open at all hours of the day and night, are designed to increase the state’s low vaccination rate, the Times of India reported.

Covid-19 cases have fallen in Tamil Nadu for the past 11 days in a row. The state has been one of the worst affected in India by the pandemic with over 34,700 fatalities.
