The weather in New York City was appropriately hot and sunny on Friday as New York-based label Monse presented its Resort 2020 collection.

On the outdoor plaza of 28 Liberty Street in Manhattan’s Financial District, stone floors and the massive ‘Group of Four Trees’ sculpture by Jean Dubuffet set the stage for the collection of men’s and women’s resort outfits. Under the bright sun, audience members including Nicky Hilton Rothschild, drag superstar Miss Fame and activist Noor Tagouri sat at simple benches along the runway’s circular border.

An austere techno beat and Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory’s ‘Pure Imagination’ played across the space as the first looks appeared in cream, black and white, showcasing the label's affinity for classic tailoring and menswear flair.

Decorated with thick and thin stripes, eye-catching fringe accents and a single, spotted fur jacket, the neutral-hued garments were broken up by pops of orange and marigold yellow that featured on slinky dresses and flowing, silky pants.

As the show went on, lightweight trench coats and blue-and-camel plaid pieces preceded pops of red on pants, a coat and a one-shoulder trapeze dress with floor-length fringe. A playing card motif carried throughout the collection gave looks a playful touch.

Looks were accessorized with boho bags in fabrics that matched the collection’s garments, as well as bauble-laden bracelets and chain belts.

Founded by Laura Kim and Fernando Garcia - a pair that also serve as co-creative directors for Oscar de la Renta - Monse has received much industry acclaim since its inception in 2015, scooping up the Swarovski Award for Emerging Talent at the 2017 CFDA Awards.

This May, the label launched its newest project: a collaboration with Disney for a pre-fall line that benefits New York pet rescue organizations.
