The retailer will use Uber cab service to undertake last-mile delivery of orders to consumer homes. The service has already been successfully implemented in cities like Kolkata, Lucknow, and Ghaziabad.

Spencer’s will soon be offering this service to all the cities and towns where it operates its stores. It aims to serve maximum customers at a time when the country is going through a lockdown to fight the spread of coronavirus.

Commenting on the partnership, Devendra Chawla, managing director of Spencer’s Retail in a statement said: “To enable more deliveries in a day to our consumers via our e-commerce and phone delivery orders, we have tied up with Uber as more number of deliveries can be done in a larger vehicle as compared to one person on one bike. Solving the last-mile deliveries is the need of the hour.”

Prabhjeet Singh, director-operations at Uber India & South Asia added: “The partnership will provide Spencer's Retail customers essential supplies at their doorsteps across multiple cities during the current lockdown. It will also help create earning opportunities for drivers, from whom Uber will not charge any commissions.”

The Kolkata-based Spencer's Retail currently has over 165 stores with a presence in over 35 cities in India. It sells a wide range of products including apparel, footwear, cosmetics, home essentials and more.
