E-commerce business Snapdeal has joined the International Trademark Association as part of its efforts to support intellectual property rights online and combat counterfeit goods.

Snapdeal is now a member of the INTA - Snapdeal

Snapdeal has increased its efforts to protect businesses and consumers from counterfeiters by joining the INTA, the business announced on Thursday, the Press Trust if India reported. The INTA, which has over 7,200 members in 187 countries, works to protect trademark owners and develop legislation pertaining to intellectual property.

"Snapdeal is committed to collaborating with the right stakeholders to address the issue of trademark counterfeiting,” said a spokesperson for Snapdeal, the Press Trust of India reported. “Snapdeal's association with INTA will allow us to share industry insights and technical know-how in the global fight against those infringing intellectual property rights."

The move follows Snapdeal’s “Brand Shield” launch last year which is designed to facilitate counterfeit reporting and its “Brand Registry” programme which gives its platform sellers a registered brand name and trademarks.

The online market both internationally and in India has struggled with counterfeit goods and the effect they have on consumer trust, especially in the cosmetics segment. E-commerce platforms have come under fire for allowing counterfeit products to be sold on their platforms but Snapdeal’s spokesperson said that platforms are just as much a victim as buyers are.
