Surat-based Shairu Gems Group has become India’s first carbon-neutral diamond manufacturer after working with carbon neutrality and climate finance business Natural Capital Partners to achieve the 'CarbonNeutral' certification.

Shairu Gems is now fully carbon neutral - Shairu Gems Group- Facebook

Shairu Gems Group has offset its carbon emissions by investing in emission reduction projects to support the transition to a low carbon global economy, the business announced on Facebook. As the business’ carbon offsets have fully compensated for its emissions, the business has been declared carbon-neutral following an independent assessment.

“Being an environmentally friendly business has always been a key pillar of our corporate philosophy,” said Shairu Gems’ director Siddharth Mehta, the Gem and Jewellery Export Promotion Council reported on its website.

“We built the world’s first LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) diamond factory in 2014 and today we have achieved carbon neutrality across our global operations. I am very proud of this achievement, which has been recognised by Natural Capital Partners.”

First established in 1976, Shairu Gems Group is a De Beers sightholder. In its carbon emissions calculation, the business included third-party transporters and distributors, as well as business travel and employee commuting.

“We increasingly see luxury consumers assessing the social and environmental impact of their purchase decisions,” said Mehta.

“Our pursuit for positive climate action will only benefit our retail partners in meeting their luxury consumers’ needs.”
