Samant Chauhan opens flagship store in Colaba, Mumbai

On November 27, Samant Chauhan opened a flagship store at the Roosevelt Building in Colaba, Mumbai.

The Delhi-based designer Samant Chauhan has set up shop in Mumbai with a new flagship store located in Colaba’s famed Roosevelt Building. Chauhan has taken the building’s colonial architecture and added a modern feel to house his designs.

Chauhan told Vogue India that he had wanted to open a store in Colaba since visiting in 2011. “I could easily relate it to my brand, my work and wished to have a store there since then,” said the designer. “My work is inspired by an era rich in art, culture and heritage, and Colaba, for me, signifies the very essence of these qualities, especially in its architecture.”

The store opens with Chauhan’s autumn/ winter collection, “Glitch” which features a striking, modern take on traditional design. The same approach has been taken with the store which sees the building’s teakwood restored in its original form and walls stripped to show the layers of paint over the years.

“A small section of the store is dedicated to exposed brick wall, which again tells us the quality and design of bricks used in that era, which are not to be seen anymore,” explained Chauhan.

The designer recently took part in Rajasthan Heritage Week and showcased Khadi muslin designs. These handwoven designs can be found along with Bhagalpuri silk pieces, leather accessories, and brass jewellery.
