British department store retailer John Lewis' sales were broadly flat year-on-year in the week to March 7, down a nominal 0.2% to £72.61m from £72.76m last year.

John Lewis said it's a "good achievement" as the figures were up against price-matching activity from last year, which came a week earlier this year. Sales in the Home sector were up 3.1% and Fashion sales were level. Sales of women's nightwear in Fashion rose by 33%, which John Lewis credits Mother's Day sales with, and the spring weather led to a 21% increase in sunglass sales.

The John Lewis website had "another good week" with sales up by 11.3%. "With the weekend's good weather prompting spring purchases and Mothering Sunday and Easter around the corner, there are plenty of reasons to be optimistic about the weeks ahead", said Christine Kasoulis, Buying Director, Home, John Lewis.
