The upcoming Saffronart jewellery conference is curated by the jewellery historian Dr Usha R. Balakrishnan and will take place at the Four Seasons in Mumbai next month. Speakers at the conference will include Balakrishnan herself as well as international jewellery specialist Joanna Hardy, jewellery historian Jack Ogden, fashion designer Wendell Rodricks, and author Manu Pillai among others. Jewellery designer Viren Bhagat will also offer his expertise on the industry he has helped shape.

The event will begin on a Friday and feature a talk on Mughal traditions followed by a conversation with Viren Bhagat. Day two will feature five sessions and include a talk by Wendell Rodricks titled, “Goa: Land of the Birth of the World’s First Indo-Western Fusion Style”. The event will end with a closing panel discussion, as per the schedule on the event’s website.

“Jewellery has always been an instrument of savings in India,” Balakrishnan told Indo-Asian News Service about the inspiration for the conference in an interview. “This sentiment endures even today. India is one of the largest consumers of gold in the world and much of this gold is hoarded in the form of jewellery. Therefore, we can call jewellery an ‘economic capital’… Jewellery is also cultural capital… above all, the vibrant gem-trade out of India, past and present, are all evidence of it.”

The art business Saffronart hosted its first jewellery conference in 2017 and the upcoming event will be its second edition. The business was founded in 2000 and holds regular art and jewellery auctions.
