Designer Sabyasachi Mukherjee has launched his latest bridal wear collection on Instagram, turning to social media to showcase his classic take on traditional opulence and thoughts on the role of weddings in fashion.

Heritage Bridal by Sabyasachi was a classic take on the Indian bride - Sabyasachi- Facebook

In lieu of a runway show or physical event, Mukherjee’s eponymous brand Sabyasachi held a display of photos and videos on Instagram on March 10 to launch new collection ‘Heritage Bridal’. The collection puts classic bridal aesthetics front and centre with copious amounts of red and gold and glittering embellishments.

“When you let craft thrive you not only restore economic sustainability but also the pride and dignity of workmanship and artisanal skill,” wrote Mukherjee on Facebook about the inspiration behind his collection.

“And it’s through the consumption of craft that you encourage the continuity of our legacy. This is where the Indian wedding plays its most important role, it is not just a celebration but is integral to the survival and growth of our craft and heritage industries.”

The collection also features an array of bridal jewellery from Mukherjee’s jewellery line. The jewellery harked back to antique craftsmanship and the large-scale pieces featured lashings of diamonds and gemstones.

“For most of the brides I know wedding jewellery isn’t just an investment, it’s an heirloom that can become part of a legacy that transcends time,” wrote Mukherjee.

“Which is why I bring back ancient and nearly forgotten techniques like double jadai, langar-pohai, and naqashi. It’s what our great-grandmothers and grandmothers wore, and somewhere it’s what we want to pass on to our children and grandchildren.”
