Traditional and bridal wear designer Sabyasachi Mukherjee has celebrated plus-size fashion in his spring/summer 2020 collection campaign, as the Indian fashion industry moves slowly towards inclusivity.

After gradually promoting plus-size models in his campaigns, this season Sabyasachi Mukherjee has shone the spotlight on size inclusivity, with his recent online collection launch. An increasing number of Indian designers are broadening the range of models they use in their campaigns, but plus-size models usually still find themselves as the odd-one-out in a photoshoot. This season, however, Mukherjee has included several plus-size models in his campaign, which has garnered support on social media.

After posting his first campaign images for spring/summer 2020 online last week, the inclusive images were met with comments on Facebook such as “Keeping it real, fabulous,” “Beautiful”, and “You give us hope.”

The campaign is part of a wider movement in Indian fashion to be more inclusive in terms of size and skin tone, something Mukherjee is at the forefront of.

The designer also held a dinner in New York last week to celebrate the launch of his jewellery collection at multi-brand luxury department store Bergdorf Goodman.

Mukherjee hosted Linda Fargo, Meeta Ghose, and Ranjana Khan, among others, at the BG Restaurant, which had specially curated décor and place settings to reflect Mukherjee’s opulent fine jewellery collection.
