SGCCI plans Dhaka office to push Surat fabric exports

In order to push exports of manmade fibre fabrics like dress materials produced in Surat to the Bangladesh apparel sector, the Southern Gujarat Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SGCCI) plans to set up an extension office in Dhaka in Bangladesh. A delegation led by SGCCI president BS Agarwal had visited Bangladesh recently.

The delegation held meetings with the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA), Federation of Bangladesh Chamber of Commerce and Industry (FBCCI) and the Chittagong Chamber of Commerce and Industry in Dhaka.

Explaining the modus operandi, Agarwal told the Times of India, “The fabric samples will be sent to the SGCCI office at Dhaka and circulated among all the garmenting units there. We will also need to register our fabrics with buyers of top global garment brands. Once it is registered, orders will start flowing.”

"The potential of Surat made polyester fabric is huge in Bangladesh and remains an unexplored market. We want our weavers and fabric processors to set up facilities in Bangladesh. The FBCCI has promised us land on long-term lease at $2 per square metre per month," Agarwal added.
