SEMrush: “Made in India” top global fashion online search term

The online search term “Made in India” garnered over 269 million searches last year making it the most used fashion search term in the world, according data from SEMrush.

“Made in India” has become a highly used internet search term

Online marketing firm SEMrush reported that India far outpaced other countries for fashion searches last year. Where “Made in India” was searched for 269 million times, China came in second with 140 million searches for “Made in China”. Italy was third with 88 million searches and the US only saw 18.8 million searches for US-made fashion. Even within the US, domestically manufactured clothing was searched for only after “Made in Mexico” and “Made in China”.

This news bodes well for the Union Government in this election year. Not only has the government put an emphasis on the e-commerce market, it has also worked consistently to increase domestic production with its “Make in India” campaign. The government aims to get India recognised as a global go-to for fashion and textiles exports and SEMrush’s data suggests that the country is on the radar of global shoppers.

However, India is struggling to compete with Bangladesh, China, and other countries for fashion and textile exports. This January, the State Minister for Textiles informed the government that India faces higher tariffs than other countries when exporting to the US and EU. Although designers and materials from India are gaining international recognition, policy and trade barriers still exist.
