Students of SCDS took part in an outdoor fashion show on Sunday to showcase and promote Mangalagiri weaves. The show took place at the Champions Yacht Club in Vijayawada and student models wore clothing they had designed from the handloom textiles.

"We have been doing this to promote the fabric, though there was no support from the government all these years," the chairperson of SCDS Samana Moosavi told the Hans India about the college’s work to promote the textile. Moosavi spoke at the event and reiterated the college’s support for local Mangalagiri weavers.

Mangalagiri is a town in the Guntur district of Andhra Pradesh famous for its own handloom textiles. The area’s handloom textiles were registered as a “handicraft” under the Geographical Indications of Goods (Registration and Protection) Act, 1999.

Mangalagiri textiles are woven with pit-looms using combed yarn. The textiles are dyed and often feature Nizam designs.

SCDS is a fashion and design institute founded in Hyderabad in 2009. The institute recently launched an international exchange programme with NABA University in Milan, Italy that allows fashion students to study abroad to promote cross-culture based learning.
